How to estimate a fence
Divide the fence run by your post spacing and round up, then add one for the starting post plus an extra post at each gate opening. Panels (the bays between posts) are simply the run divided by spacing, rounded up.
Concrete for the holes
Each post hole is a small cylinder: π × radius² × depth. This calculator totals that volume across every post and converts it to 80 lb bags, same as the concrete calculator.

How far apart should fence posts be spaced?
8 feet is most common for wood privacy and picket fences. Chain link often uses 10 feet; taller panels sometimes need 6 feet.
How deep should a fence post hole be?
A common rule is one third of the post's above-ground height, minimum 24 inches for a standard 6 foot fence. Cold climates need holes below the local frost line.
Do I need concrete for every fence post?
Corner, end, and gate posts should always be set in concrete. Line posts can sometimes use compacted gravel instead, depending on fence style and soil.
